Since the use of mask became mandatory in so many places, as if Covid wasn’t enough, a new problem started to emerge: Maskne, which is nothing less than acne caused by the use of masks.
Although there is no way around the use of masks (let’s DO THIS!), there are a few simple ways to avoid maskne and to fight the ones that are already there.
For the purpose of this post, I’ll focus first on how to avoid them, since the treatment is the same as we do for regular acne.
1 – Avoid wearing makeup under your mask
I know it’s hard, but this is SUCH an important step in preventing maskne! When we’re wearing masks and breathing, we’re generating steam that’s coming right back at our face. That opens up our pores and, if you’re wearing makeup, they will clog and make it easier for maskne to appear.
If you have to wear makeup…
If makeup is extremely essential to you, making some substitutions will help you avoid maskne:
- Instead of using foundation, try choosing a tinted moisturizer or serum with a light texture. It will treat your skin and help conceal imperfections. I love this one from Sisley and this one from Ilia.
- Choose clean and non-toxic makeup brands – although they’re still makeup products, the clean ingredients will not harm your skin as much as the regular ones we usually find in makeup.
2 – Opt for cotton masks and wash them regularly
Some disposable masks have synthetic materials that can cause itching and allergies on your skin. Try choosing cotton masks that are less aggressive. And don’t forget to wash them regularly – not only to prevent diseases, but also to prevent bacteria from growing there.
3 – The Toner is your best friend
Using a toner daily before you do your skincare steps and using a mask can help closing the pores and preventing impurities from coming in and the pores from clogging.
4 – Don’t forget to use your Acne treatment products
This last tip is the most obvious one, but has to be said: use acne treatment products! Especially when the maskne is already developed.
If you don’t want ingredients that are too aggressive such as Retinoic acid or tretinoin (both vitamin A based), Azuleic Acid is a great alternative and really effective, AND you can find it in drugstores.
An Acne line I really like that was really effective for me too is this one from Perricone MD.
